Optimal Production Policies with Multistage Stochastic Demand Leadtimes
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study the value of multi-stage advance demand information (MADI) in a production system in which customers place an order in advance of their actual need, and each order goes through multiple stages before it becomes due. Any order which is not immediately lled at its due date will be backordered. The producer must decide whether to produce or not based on real-time information regarding current and future orders. We formulate the problem as a Markov decision process and analyze the impact of the demand information on the production policy and the cost. We show that the optimal production policy is a state-dependent base-stock policy, and we show that it has certain monotonicity properties. We also introduce a simple heuristic policy that is signi cantly easier to compute and that inherits the structural properties of the optimal policy. In addition, we show that its base-stock levels bound those of the socially optimal policy. Numerical study identi es the conditions under which MADI is most bene cial and shows that the heuristic performs almost as well as the optimal policy when MADI is most bene cial.

Closed-Form Approximations for Optimal (r, q) and (S, T) Policies in a Parallel Processing Environment
We consider a single-item continuous-review (r, q) inventory system with a renewal demand process and i.i.d. stochastic leadtimes. Using a stationary marked point process technique and a heavy traffic limit, we prove a previous conjecture that inventory position and inventory on-order are asymptotically independent. We also establish closed-form expressions for the optimal policy parameters and...
متن کاملAn Introduction to Joint Pricing and Inventory Management under Stochastic Demand
In this paper, we review the models of joint pricing-inventory management under demand uncertainty. Our focus is on establishing a unified modeling framework that incorporates both pricing and inventory decisions. It applies to different problem settings in this area with proper adaptations. In particular, we employ our modeling framework to five different key problems: (1) single period proble...
متن کاملA Markovian continuous review inventory model with leadtimes and disasters
We consider a continuous review (s, S) model with lost sales in the presence of unexpected events. Such unexpected events include external disasters (e.g. theft or earthquakes) and internal disasters (e.g. malfunctioning of a storage equipment or fire). Once a disaster occurs the inventory drops instantaneously to zero. The total cost includes the cost of: ordering, unsatisfied demand, units de...
متن کاملApproximation Algorithms for the Stochastic Lot-Sizing Problem with Order Lead Times
We develop new algorithmic approaches to compute provably near-optimal policies for multi-period stochastic lot-sizing inventory models with positive lead times, general demand distributions and dynamic forecast updates. The policies that are developed have worst-case performance guarantees of 3 and typically perform very close to optimal in extensive computational experiments. The newly propos...
متن کاملInventories with Multiple Supply Sources and Networks of Queues with Overflow Bypasses
Consider an inventory system with multiple supply sources and Poisson demand. The replenishment leadtimes from each source are stochastic, representing congestion and disruption. We develop performance evaluation and optimization tools for a family of reasonable order policies. These policies take into account real-time supply information, which can be obtained through tracking technologies suc...
